Coolio- Gangster's Paradise
Coolio 原名 Artis Ivey，是 Wast Cost / G-Funk / Gangsta Rap 的代表人物之一，1991 年發蹟於 L.A，
從多單曲到有專輯的發現讓 Coolio 開始他的傳奇人生，但佔領嘻哈狠角色排名卻要從
1995 年說起在蜜雪兒菲佛主演的電影【危險遊戲】主題曲「Gangsta's Paradise」
(取樣Stevie Wonder的"Pastime Paradise")讓他吸引全球的注意力，也獲得葛萊美獎最佳饒舌演唱歌曲
以及告示牌雜誌95年年終冠軍單曲，他的惡魔頭才真的為眾人所知。
之後「Too Hot」 受時尚走秀的邀約現場演出，再者「Sumpin' New」的「1.2.3.4.」
歌詞更是搖翻全台舞池(造成嘻哈變跳恰恰始作俑者)，讓台灣與美國每晚都在播，
這一切都是因為它的歌曲節奏強烈唸唱的起轉也富有節奏，
在連續的狂播風中讓他成為少數嘻哈音樂普及率最高的藝人，就如此的踏上嘻哈狠角色一途。
Coolio 除了影響美國東岸外，也引響台灣嘻哈風潮中，

這部電影的好萊塢式不合理並非我們今日的主題)的電影「Dangerous Minds」，
Coolio推出了新專輯的同名單曲"Gangsta's Paradise"，
在冷冽的光束籠罩與Michelle Pfeiffer的慰問下，Coolio以傳道者之姿，悲憤地道出黑人青年深陷幫派泥沼，
是一種何其不幸又無奈的悲哀。其實這種自怨自艾的悲情饒舌樂手滿街都是，
"Gangsta's Paradise"憑什麼成為全世界最賣座的單曲？單就音樂的角度去看，
Coolio 的歌曲不但寫出幫派青年對自己生命最深刻的疑問，更把這種共有的悲苦心裡經驗成功地統合起來，
成就了這首極為撼動人心的黑幫輓歌。 而Coolio最成功的關鍵，
則是選用了Stevie Wonder的老歌"Pastime Paradise" ，從開場急切、懸疑的弦樂以及hip-hop節拍，
到副歌部分，由新生代歌手L.V.以Stevie Wonder式的唱腔進一步地引導著這種悲憤的情緒。
背景黑人教堂福音式的合聲宛若無數悲苦的靈魂，吶喊著這種無力改變的宿命。
滾石雜誌都把這首歌曲選為年度最佳單曲的第一名，而它也的確不浪得虛名。

語出舊約聖經之讚美詩，原文為：Even though I walk through the valley of shadow of death, I fear no evil, for thou art with me.(Psalm 23)這句話在許多電影皆曾出現過
(2) 'Cause I've been blasting and laughing so long
"blast"指的是吸毒，這兩句在說，Coolio吸毒晃蕩多年，他媽早就覺得他沒救了
(3) I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
這句話表示Coolio還有點羞恥心與自覺，知道這一切荒唐都不該怪別人
(4) Me be treated like a punk, you know that's unheard of
這裡的"punk"在黑人的俚語解作懦夫，特別指自己沒勇氣棄絕這種生活方式
(5) you and your homies might be lined in chalk
"homies"指的是幫派的兄弟們，這幾句話在說，大家隨時都要小心自己的言行，否則就要橫死街頭，"line in chalk" 是指人遭殺害後，警察到達現場在屍體周圍地上用粉筆圈畫，以保持現場研判案情

這是說他們這些亡命之徒，四處晃蕩但絕非好惹

一般混幫派的黑人，能活過18歲已經是運氣很好的，他們過的是沒有明天的日子，而他們也看得很開，畢竟「死」，也許不過就是下一個心跳之後的事(death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away)

"front"是指冷漠，一般人對他們的死活根本充耳不聞
(13) I got my hand on the pump, foo!
"pump"是指槍的板機，這句是說：社會對我們如此冷漠，我們只好繼續過這樣打殺的幫派生活，笨蛋！"foo"作"fool"解。
Coolio寫的歌詞算是Hip-Hop中相當易理解的，比起Public Enemy、Wu Tang Clan的GZA等寫的深奧黑話，與為了合韻腳而創立的大量語彙、轉注、假借等歌詞比起，這只能算是初級班等級，例如GZA會為了歌詞的對仗與流暢，把鈔票用"president paper"來替換，紙上有總統，豈不就是鈔票，妙哉
